DIY Stud Muffin Horse Treats

peppermint stud muffins

We all know how EXPENSIVE quality horse treats can be, the good ones upwards of $25 for a small bag of a few treats which can be very costly.   I did a bunch of research on the ingredients used and what is good/not good for horses to have.  I then found several recipes online for various treats and came up with this recipe which turned out incredible!   The texture was perfect, the horses loved them and I had almost everything on hand already so it was super easy to do.

These are not only great for showing your 4-legged fur friend how much they're loved, but these made excellent gifts for your horse lover!  Not only are they made with love, but they're easy on the wallet which is a bonus.

We also made a few without the peppermints and cut them in half and fed them to our goats. They devoured them!

Give these a try and let us know how you liked them!

Here's what you'll need:

1 1/4 c oats (I used old fashioned oats because that's what I had on hand. I'm sure steel cut or quick oats would work fine)

3/4 c molasses

1/2 cup flour

3/4 cup ground flax seed

2 tsp cornstarch

1 tsp cinnamon

1/4 cup water

1 medium apple (grated)

2 carrots (grated)

12 peppermints

stud muffin ingredients

Instructions:

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees
  2. Heavily grease mini muffin tin with corn oil. *This is important to use plenty of oil, otherwise they can stick to the pan.
  3. Mix oats, flax, corn starch & cinnamon together in large bowl.
  4. Add molasses and water and coat the oats.
  5. mix in apple and carrot
  6. Fill muffin cups 3/4 full.
  7. Bake for about 15 minutes or until done.
  8. Press peppermints into the centers of each muffin just enough to get the peppermint in the muffin, while still exposing the top of the peppermint. Its important to do this while the muffins are still warm so they press easily, I let the first batch cool too much and had a hard time getting the mints in.
  9. Let cool completely to room temp.
  10. Reward your ponies with lots of homemade love.
